Ever experienced a really great trainer, facilitator or presenter…?
Ever experienced a really bad trainer, facilitator or presenter…? Ever wondered what it was that makes the difference…?
Like many people, I always assumed that talented people were “naturals” at stuff….natural leaders, presenters, talkers, artists, musicians, etc.
I would watch great trainers, facilitators, speakers (front of room professionals) and think “they must have some natural talent, or something to make them this great”. Front of Room (FOR) is the term I use to collectively refer to people who either deliver their material “at the front of the room” or have to manage in some way, group dynamics.
So, what I discovered over the course of my research into what makes a great FOR professional is that it has nothing to do with natural ability. There is a combination of things, techniques and beliefs, which can be taught, that can help create the kind of experiences where participants walk away saying “best session ever!”
World Class Front of Room professionals:
Around this there was also a consistency in how they went about doing this. They are able to connect themselves and the topic to the group in a way that provides motivation for the topic. They are able to clarify the content so that participants can acquire the information they need. They create ways to bring the material to life in practical ways for the group to have the convincing experience of the content and confirm how it works for them. Finally, they contextualise the material in such a way, that it can be generalised in multiple contexts, most importantly, out of the room in which it is being delivered.
When you combine all of this, you get The PEP Factor!
